It's about the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. He expressed to his disciples an extraordinary truth. That, as the Son of God, He has the authority over His life. He can control His Life, His Death, and His Life again. In His words:"
The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life - only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and the authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father." (John 10:18)
It is hard to believe that some human being on this planet can have such authority. We all know, that any person living on this planet is a subject to dangerous events, that can ends his or her life without that personal control. It can be an accident, an illness, an unfortunate situation, a rage of nature, or simple put, someone just kills you.
To be honest with ourselves, the death is always comes without our control or our accord. Even that people killing themselves, that moment of life living the body is under no control from the suicide person.
But, let’s point again. Jesus said, that He received the authority from God, and the power, of course, to control His life, in or out of His body. So, in other words, no one can kills Him, or destroy Him, so that His life ends without His accord.
During His ministry on Earth, Jesus had enemies that wanted to kills Him. They tried many time to do it, far before His Passion. The Bible recorded it.
" For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him, not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God." (John 5:18) By killing Him, have been a proof that He did not came down from Heaven, but He is just a human been. When Jesus came for the feast of Dedication at Jerusalem, the Jews " picked up stones to stone him." (John 10:31).
" Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp." (John 10:39). So, the matter of killing Jesus it was really serious one. The enemies tried to kills Him by any means. But Jesus was miraculously in control all the time. Even on the day when He was captured, He was in full control. Judas, the traitor came along with soldiers, officials, Pharisees, carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. But, when Jesus identified Himself to the crowd, it is recorded that " they drew back and fell to the ground". (John 18: 6) The apostle Peter pulls out his sword and tried to defend Jesus, by cutting off the ear of one servant. Jesus rebuked Peter by saying: " Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"(John 18: 11). And He healed the servant. His action proves that He was in control at His arrest. He gave Himself up to the crowd that came after Him. No one could get Him otherwise.
Further, before Pilate, the Roman consul, Jesus explained why He had given in the Romans hands. He said: " My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place." The basis of what Jesus said is that His kingdom is not from this world. So, He gave up Himself to Passion, and later to Death, for whatever His sacrifice will do. The human been could not make Him any harm, more or less that the authority from above is given. Pilate, not understanding this, have tried to bring Jesus to reality, his reality, by saying:" Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?" Jesus answered," You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin." (John 19:11) The reality for Jesus was that God is in full control of His life and death, not men.
The final proof of Jesus control over His life and death is recorded in John chapter 19. At the end of crucifixion, Jesus said:' It is finished". With that he bowed his head and gave up his spirit." Which means He did not died, but gave up his spirit, when he wanted, not because of crucifixion. The other two men crucified with Him were still alive. In order to make them die quickly, the Roman soldiers had their legs broken. But when they reached to Jesus He was already dead. In order to be sure of his death, the soldier pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, " bringing a sudden flow of blood and water."
After the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples. The only signs of His crucifixion was the signs of the nails in his hands and feet, and of course the sign of his wound on his side. He said to Thomas:" Put your finger here, see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."
At last. Thomas believed that His Lord, Jesus was risen. He took His life
back as promised. Jesus answer to Thomas remain as of today available
to us:" Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those
who have not seen and yet have believed."
